1. Match.com has been around for a while now and they still have managed to keep up with the times.  They are one of the largest dating services next to Matchmaker and e-Harmony.  They now offer their service called “MatchMobile” for member’s cell phones.  You can update your profile, search for matches or initiate contact with others who peak your interest right from the convenience of your home.  Enjoy the same great features on your phone as you do online via your PC.  Members can even utilize location based tools to search for singles that are local to their area.  Match.com has a good track record for joining together Christian singles and with their smartly designed matching system, it makes it even easier.  Playing cupid is what Match.com does best and being able to use their services on your smart phone just takes it one step further.
2.   ChristianMingle.com is a registered trademark of MingleMatch, Inc. and they have been in business since 1996 providing Christian singles an opportunity to connect with someone in a Christian relationship or just to find new friends.  Finding gods match for you just got easier and is less expensive compared to other Christian based dating sites.  Their website was recently updated.  For only $13.99 per month, members can use smilies, cards and IM to meet their lifelong love matches.   They allow members to connect on every level and the smiles feature is a great way to break the ice.  Finding a good Christian dating service is a gift from above and Christian Mingle allows you to walk the path that god has set aside for you.  See what you have in common with your Christian connection and get to know Christian Mingle better to see all the great features they can offer you.
3.   eHarmony.com actually began as a Christian dating site and so they are grounded in what’s truly important in finding valued matches.  Although users might have to navigate around certain sections of the site that might promote a more casual dating practice, we still think it’s a worthwhile site and they now even welcome Christian Gays and Lesbians with open arms.  Their philosophy impression is that they treat all users with dignity and respect, no matter what your age or gender.  One of the requirements that participants must be willing to complete is their US patented matching compatibility test.  Christians can list very detailed matching criteria in order to examine and fulfill their core value beliefs with finding a partner for lasting happiness and fruitful relationships.
4.   BigChurch.com has been joining people together in faith and love since the year 2000 and offers an alternative dating scene.  The website has a surprisingly large member data base and is filled with loving individuals who have honest and Christian like values just waiting to meet their life partners.   Besides romance, they also offer people the chance to find pen pals, friends or even bible study buddies.  The main objective for Big Church is to give members an outlet for communication by providing a virtuous atmosphere and interest group activities for Christians.  Members can choose from three categories to specify what they are looking for. Once free members sign up, they can then browse through their large international database to connect with other members.  Meet wholesome and interesting people by setting up a friend page or pop into one of Big Church’s varied chat rooms to introduce yourself.
5.   Chemistry.com is slowly growing to be quite a contender in the dating niche market and is actually a great competitor against e-Harmony.   They offer members a guided communication system to assist them in initiating contact with their matches.  Advice can be found sprinkled about the site in the form of blogs, interviews and videos.  This gives the members the confidence they need on how to handle the first five dates.  The sign up process is not short and requires a little bit of patience.  The profile questionnaire takes about 45 minutes and includes a 4 phase process in which Christians can select the most important relationship essentials, short answers, e-mail and how they feel about in-person meetings.  The majority of the member base seems to be more women than men age 35 and older.   If you’re ready to give online Christian dating a try, they are sponsoring a current special that gives members 3 months of service for the price of a one month subscription.
6. SinglesofFaith.com is a great online community of like-minded Christians who want to find partners who want to share their love of god with one another.  They focus on spirituality as the foundation of their dating site and prepares members for finding the partner that god wants them to be with.  There is a blended combination of a Christian singles dating site and an outreach ministry service.  They offer a quick and easy sign up process that includes completing a sentence to screen new members such as “I want to meet those who say a Christian is”, etc.  This process helps to screen out members who are not totally invested in finding a true Christian match.   A nice feature of Singles of Faith is that you can still join as a guest, even if you cannot afford to pay their monthly membership fee.  Unpaid members can search a number of areas, as well as upload their photo, create a profile and send e-mails.  They frequently run Christian events and workshops where members can meet one another in person to establish a fruitful relationship.  Overall, their membership prices are fair and each profile seems to be highly detailed with member photos for easy browsing.
7.   PerfectMatch.com rest assures that they will find their lifelong partner and establish meaningful connections.  PerfectMatch has become so popular is has been featured in many magazines and talk shows.  Their exclusive Duet Compatibility Profile system will ensure that you get a quality match that shares your faith in the Lord.   PerfectMatch is universal, but has a large member base of 50 and older Christian singles.  The growth of singles that are aged 50 and older has almost doubled since 2005 and is not designed for the casual dater.   PerfectMatch offers a guarantee to paid members who have stayed longer than a month.  If you decide you are not satisfied with the selected number of matches that are sent to you, they will extend your membership with no additional fees for a limited time.  With this type of guarantee, it’s hard to go wrong.   Visit them today to purchase a 2 month membership and get 2 months for free!
8. ChristianCafe.com is the one of the largest Christian based dating sites for Christian singles online today.  Christian Café carries a lot of credibility, as they have been around for a long time.  They provide a place where religious based singles can be matched to one another from a high quality group of people.  This Christian based group features a wide spectrum of people who have good morals, values and share a lot of the same views about their beliefs.  The site claims to contain over 100,000 like-minded Christians in their database from almost every age range and Christian denomination.  The majority of their member base is from the U.S. and Canada.   Bringing Christian singles together, as well as closer to god is their #1 outreach goal.  Christiancafe.com offers a place for singles where they can feel free to establish emotional bonds and healthy faith based relationships.  Partners who are searching for a companion that meets their needs and also share a commitment to God will find their website a breath of fresh air.   The site is well organized and easy to use offering an abundance of search tools for members to use.
9.   MatchMaker.com offers one of the best well rounded dating communities on the web today.  They have been online long enough to develop a solid reputation for safety and screening.  A nice perk for new members is that they can browse Christian members before having to sign up for the service.  Users can search using site specifics on age, location and be matched up to other companions looking for a soulful connection.  Self-discovery quizzes will give users the tools for a head start and narrow down the playing field.  Several options are available to create just the right environment to selecting someone with great core values, including the use of video introductions inside member profiles.  Even though video match and voicemail have additional fees, they seem well worth every penny when it comes to finding your perfect Christian love match.  Lasting romance waits, as Matchmaker is communicating god’s love one match at a time.
10.   CatholicMatch.com If your Catholic and want a serious dating site to match you to other Catholic faith based individuals, Catholic Match is for you.  It’s actually not just for dating.  Members can search for friends, partners, chat partners or vocations. Catholic Match was started in 1998 and promotes Catholicism among forums, web quotes and chat.  The site offers an online Catholic magazine, as well as a free personal temperament assessment test based on Catholic studies.  A site events schedule is provided to users so that they can keep track of conferences, bible studies, rosary groups and book clubs.  Users can find honest and lasting faithful relationships in a fun and exciting atmosphere. Catholic Match offers numerous chat rooms and forums that are rich in information and educates members on the ins and outs of Catholicism.  It is important to note that free users and guests have limited capabilities.  Before completing a profile it is best to keep this in mind.

Post image for Love Starts with Honesty to Yourself

Leslie Petruk is the founder of Stepping Stones, a North Carolina-based counseling service focused on getting clients to be honest first with themselves. She explains how taking care of yourself helps bring clients one step closer to love.

Thanks for joining us, Leslie! You’re one of the top counseling services in North Carolina. Tell us a little bit about your past and why you established your firm, Stepping Stones?

I moved to Charlotte in 2001, leaving a full individual practice in Austin, TX.  I always had the vision of one day building a counseling center that provided a “one stop shop” for families to get services and things just fell into place when I moved to Charlotte to start such a practice.  I was pregnant with my 2nd child when we moved here.  We found out when he was about 9 month old that he had a genetic disorder and had special needs.  I met a social worker who also had a child with special needs and we decided to start a support group for parents of children with special needs.  Before we knew it, we were opening a counseling center.  She left the practice a few years later and I continued on and grew the business.  I have had my center for 10 years now.  I am currently in the process of making some shifts in my practice and business and reducing the number of counselors but increasing the services offered to include Leadership and Business Coaching as well as Parenting Workshops, Seminars, and Coaching.  We will continue to provide counseling services as well.

Relationships are at the center of what you do at Stepping Stones. They can be so similar and so different from person-to-person. What are some things you do to help build communication between people?

I believe in authenticity and creating an environment that allows people to speak for all of the parts of themselves.  I work from a model called Internal Family Systems and they have a saying, “all parts are welcome”, meaning it’s okay to speak for the parts of ourselves that have things to say that are not necessarily what someone might want to hear, but it’s important to speak “for” the part rather then “from” it, which allows space for others to hear what you are saying.  This allows for authentic communication and provides an environment for everyone to feel heard.

When it comes to falling in love everything can feel muddled. What are the biggest hurdles fro new loves to clear in order to find long term happiness?

That is a huge question!  First, I think it takes time for couples to get to know one another.  It takes about 18 months for the brain chemicals associated with infatuation to wear off.  That’s when you really begin to “see” all aspects of your partner.  How couples work through conflict is a huge predictor of a successful relationship, so that’s an important skill to master.  There is also a time in every relationship that one comes to realize that their partner can not fulfill emptiness or hurts from their past and each person has to take responsibility for caring for their own wounded parts.  By learning how to care for your “Self” individually and connect to the essence of who you are meant to be, you are then able to connect to your partner in a whole new way without being responsible for their wounds and past hurts.  When one is able to be in “Self Leadership”, you are able to live from a place of curiosity, compassion and clarity.  This allows you to extend those same qualities to your partner, which is much different then seeking their approval or needing them to fulfill your unmet needs in some way.

The online world can help and hurt in finding love. Dating sites have never been safer and more popular. How do you advise your clients to use them? Things to do? Avoid?

In all honesty, this has not been a topic of discussion with my clients, but what I would say is to be smart about it.  Don’t give out personal information until you have a good sense of the person, meet them in a public place the first number of meetings, maybe even go on a double date until you become better acquainted, and trust your instincts!

What is the most common complain you field from those coming out of a “bad” relationship? Is it lack of communication, lack of trust, etc?

Lack of communication is a big one.  We all bring baggage from our own family of origin.  If conflict resolution and communication was not something that was modeled in your family, then it is hard to bring the skill into your relationships.  Often times one partner is emotionally shut down and the other feels emotionally abandoned, which leads to a lack of communication and connection.  These are all common dynamics that I see when working with couples.  Often times, it’s not that couples don’t want to communicate or connect, they just don’t know how.

What are some tips you give those who fell like their love life is hitting an extended rough patch?

To look within and identify the parts of themselves that are trying to protect them from getting hurt and how they may inhibit their relationships.  For example, if getting close to someone starts to feel scary so they start to pick a fight, that’s a part of them that is working to protect them from being hurt.  By getting to know that part and what emotions and beliefs are that it holds, they can learn about the parts fears and help it find a new “job”.  When relationships don’t work out, it’s easy to point the finger and put the blame on the other person, but looking within and considering what parts of you might be contributing to the conflict or problem is more likely to result in a successful long term relationship.  Being able to identify the parts that get triggered within you that may hold certain wounds, emotions and beliefs from the past will be important to prevent those dynamics from replaying.

Anything specific?

Getting to know your own internal system, hurts and wounds from the past and understanding the stories that those parts hold so as to not repeat the very things those parts fear the most will ultimately result in the ability to care for your own parts and release your partner from that responsibility.

Any more pieces of advice for those in a relationship, either on the way up, or the way out?

Being in a relationship with another, requires a solid relationship with “Self” first.  We all have the internal resources to take care of the parts inside of us.  Most people enter a relationship thinking and expecting their partner to love them the way they have always wanted to be loved and believe their partner can be this redeemer who will love them unconditionally.  This is an impossible setup and leads to great disappointment.  The key is learning to care for your own parts rather then placing the responsibility on your partner.  You can learn more about the model of Internal Family Systems.

Thanks for your time and best of luck with Stepping Stones!
